EMPA Alum Elected NJCM President

Mayor Jason Cilento’s swearing-in as President of the New Jersey Conference of Mayors (NJCM) marked a defining moment at this year’s 60th Annual Spring Conference, held May 27 at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City. A graduate of the Executive Master of Public Administration (EMPA) program at Rutgers–Camden, Cilento brings both a practitioner’s insight and a policy-focused vision to the role. Themed From Main Street to State Street: The Power of Mayoral Leadership, the event gathered municipal leaders from across New Jersey to share strategies and shape the year ahead.

“It is an honor to be sworn in as president of the New Jersey Conference of Mayors,” said Cilento, who currently serves as mayor of Dunellen. “I am excited for the year ahead and look forward to building on the foundation laid by Mayor Bob Conley and the leaders who came before me.” Under his leadership, NJCM will focus on restoring energy tax revenues to municipalities, expanding affordable housing, improving NJ Transit and local infrastructure, and strengthening coordination with the Governor’s Office. “Together, we will ensure our voices are heard—from Main Street to State Street.”

Established in 1963, NJCM serves as a powerful, nonpartisan voice for the state’s 564 municipalities. Through legislative advocacy, statewide convenings, and leadership development, the organization empowers mayors to respond to community needs while shaping long-term policy. Cilento’s election highlights the continued impact of Rutgers–Camden graduates in public service and the enduring value of mayoral leadership in advancing local priorities on a state and national stage.
