Data Science Certificate

Certificate Overview

Graduate students at Rutgers University–Camden have the opportunity to earn a Certificate in Data Science along with their current degree program. The completion of the Certificate will be noted on a student’s transcript.

Students must complete four or more classes (12 or more credits) in statistics, data management, and research design to obtain the Data Science Certificate.

Public & Nonprofit Management Certificate

Certificate Overview

The Public and Nonprofit Management certificate is offered by the Department of Public Policy and Administration (DPPA) at Rutgers–Camden.

How to apply for the Public and Nonprofit Management Certificate Program:

  • To create an account, go to here.
  • Choose to create a community ID or enter your existing Rutgers ID and “apply now”.
  • Select Graduate for the level of application.
  • Under the application selection for applicant type, select non-degree (see figure 1 below).
  • Continue to the following sections and complete as required. An application fee is required. Certificate students who later apply to the MPA degree program at Rutgers-Camden will have the application fee waived. At the Program of study section, the applicant must select the following:

Public History Certificate

Certificate Overview

Graduate students at Rutgers University–Camden have the opportunity to earn a Certificate in Public History along with their current degree program. The completion of the Certificate will be noted on a student’s transcript.

Certificate Requirements

To be awarded a Certificate in Public History graduate students would need to complete the following 3 courses:

  1. Issues in Public History
  2. A public history elective
  3. An internship in public history or an approved substitution for this course (such as an Independent Study public history project, the Practicum in Public History Course, or an Eagleton Program Internship).

For History graduate students, courses taken to earn the Public History Certificate are in addition to courses taken to earn the Master’s Degree and cannot be counted for credit for both the Master’s Degree and the Public History Certificate.

Teacher of Students with Disabilities Certificate

Certificate Overview

This seven course sequence will allow the student to earn this certificate at Rutgers and will align the student to apply to the state for a Teacher of Students with Disabilities endorsement. This can stand alone as a seven course sequence for those students who have a license already and are looking to add on Teacher of Students with Disabilities. Or, it can go alongside a student’s initial certification program in Early Childhood, Elementary, or Secondary as an Rutgers certificate with eligibility to earn the additional state endorsement.

Certificate Requirements

  • Psychological Foundations of Learning– 56:300:500 (3 credits)
  • This course examines child and adolescent development and focuses on developmental stages, learner motivation, student interests, creating a healthy learning climate, language development, and individual differences. (NJPST 1, 2, 3)

  • Exceptionalities – 56:300:501 (3 credits)
  • A survey of the neurological, sensory, orthopedic, communicative, and social disabilities, including Autism Spectrum Disorders, present in children, and the impact of these on the psychological and academic development of the child. Students will also examine the impact of the disabilities on cognitive, mental, and social growth, the factors to be considered in assessment and rehabilitative developments, and strategies for professional collaboration to meet students’ needs. (NJPST 1, 2, 10, 11)

  • Managing Student Behaviors – 56:300:502 (3 credits)
  • An examination of behavioral and psychotherapies for the range of behaviors found in the classroom. The course will equip students with a variety of researched-based strategies and models of discipline to address behavior management of all students in a classroom. (NJPST 1, 2, 3)

  • Early Childhood/ Elementary Classroom Assessments 56:300:507 (3 credits) OR Secondary Classroom Assessments 56:300:508 (3 credits)
  • An overview of the knowledge, skills, and understanding of assessment issues related to students in both general and special education settings. The types and characteristics of developmentally appropriate assessments, both formal and informal, and the use of assessment to set instructional goals, monitor progress, and determine the effectiveness of instruction. (NJPST 6)

  • Language and Literacy in Special Education 56:300:530 (3 credits)
  • An analysis of the development of language and literacy skills in both typical and atypical development. Students will examine current reading and communication strategies as they relate to the various academic disciplines in education. (NJPST 1, 2, 4, 5)

  • Instructional Strategies for Special Education 56:300:531 (3 credits)
  • A survey of the research-based instructional strategies, materials, and technologies necessary for a classroom of diverse learners. Students will learn to plan both short and long-term units of instruction for a variety of instructional settings, including children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Students will also gain practice in assessing students’ needs and using this information as a basis for choosing materials and content, planning, and presenting such information. (NJPST 3, 5, 7, 8)

  • The Special Education Process 56:300:532 (3 credits)
  • A detailed analysis of the special education process from identification to transition into adulthood and independence. Students will learns the principles of collaboration, both internal and external to the classroom, school, and special education procedures. (NJPST 7, 9, 10, 11)

Teaching English as a Second Language Certificate

Certificate Overview

The ESL endorsement as a state license allows the holder to teach English as a Second Language in all public schools. The ESL certificate program requires 15 credit hours of instruction in linguistics, language acquisition, developing literacy skills for the second language learner, methods and theory of bilingual/ESL education and the structure of American English.

Students will take courses in:

  • Methods & Theory of Teaching ESL & Bilingual Learners

The Learning Outcomes for the program include:

Bilingual Education Certificate

Certificate Overview

The Bilingual endorsement allows the holder to teach Bilingual/Bicultural education in all public schools. The certificate for Bilingual requires 12 credit hours of formal instruction in linguistics, language acquisition, developing literacy skills for the second language learner, and methods and theory of bilingual/ESL education.

Students will take courses in:

Supervision Certificate

Certificate Overview (Beginning Spring 2025)

The Supervisor Certificate (endorsement) is required in the state of New Jersey for all supervisors of instruction and athletic directors who do not hold a standards principal’s endorsement. A supervisor is defined as any school officer who is charged with authority and responsibility for the continuing direction and guidance of the work of instructional personnel. The endorsement also authorizes appointment as an assistant superintendent in charge of curriculum and/or instruction (paraphrased from the NJDOE site). Students who enroll in this program would be seeking to advance in their current role to become effective leaders in New Jersey (or elsewhere) K-12 schools.

Students will take courses in:

  • Supervision of Instruction (3 credits)
  • Curriculum Design and Development for Instructional Leaders (3 credits)
  • Leadership Dynamics (3 credits)
  • Curriculum Development and Evaluation (3 credits)

The Learning Outcomes for the program include:

  • Students will learn the general principles of instructional staff supervision for grades PK-12.
  • Students will create, evaluate, and use English language teaching materials.
  • Students will create, evaluate, and develop curriculum tools.
  • Students will explore how to supervise instructional staff and the development of curricula.
