Challenging the Narratives Around Black Women & Girls
Resilience for Black women and girls is often misunderstood, celebrated in ways that glorify struggle or demand relentless strength. A new article in American Psychologist, “I Am Not (Your) Superwoman, Black Girl Magic, or Beautiful Struggle: Rethinking the Resilience of Black Women and Girls,” challenges these narratives and calls for a shift toward holistic well-being. Co-authored by Dr. Valerie N. Adams-Bass, Assistant Professor of Childhood Studies, and Keisha L. Bentley-Edwards, the piece examines how resilience is framed and offers a fresh perspective on fostering sustainable growth.
The authors explore the cultural constructs of “Black Girl Magic” and the “Strong Black Woman” schema, highlighting their unintended consequences—from perpetuating stereotypes to placing undue burdens on individuals. By integrating Black feminist thought and womanism frameworks, the article redefines resilience as a dynamic process that addresses systemic barriers and immediate needs alike. This rethinking encourages collective responsibility rather than solely individual perseverance.
