Global Perspective on Public Administration

Bringing a wealth of experience in nonprofit leadership and strategic policy planning from Lagos, Nigeria, Funmi Adebajo sought a Public Administration MPA program that would provide both the analytical skills and practical tools needed to drive meaningful community change. At Rutgers–Camden, she found exactly that—a graduate program that blends theory with real-world application, preparing students to tackle complex social challenges. From policy analysis to hands-on experience in community development, Funmi’s journey reflects the program’s ability to shape leaders ready to make a lasting impact.

Finding the Right Program: A Global Perspective on Community Development

Coming from a background in nonprofit leadership and strategic policy planning in Lagos, Nigeria, I sought a program that blended theoretical foundations, practical applications, and a global perspective on community development. Rutgers–Camden met these criteria. I was particularly inspired by the university’s role in revitalization efforts within Camden City and its impact on expanding education access through the Rutgers-LEAP Academy. Additionally, the opportunity to learn from internationally recognized community development expert Dr. Gloria Bonilla-Santiago played a key role in my decision to join the program.

The mentorship and encouragement from faculty have reinforced my commitment to nonprofit leadership, policy advocacy, and strategic consulting on a global scale.

Building Skills for Meaningful Change

Through a combination of coursework, internship experiences, and directed study, I have strengthened my research skills—particularly in policy analysis and program evaluation. The program has also enhanced my ability to design sustainable, community-driven solutions to systemic social challenges. Beyond these technical skills, I have developed a deeper capacity for empathy, which is essential for creating policies and grassroots interventions that are both effective and equitable.

Integrating Theory and Practice

One of the unique strengths of the Rutgers–Camden MPA program is its holistic approach to education. The curriculum balances technical training in public administration—through courses like Public Budgeting and Policy Analysis—with a deep understanding of socioeconomic challenges, explored in courses such as Community Development and Poverty Alleviation Strategies. This integration of theory and practice ensures that graduates are well-equipped to make a tangible impact in their fields. During my internship at the Camden County Community Development Office, I was able to apply my learning in real-world settings, contributing to policy development, engaging with nonprofit organizations, and working directly with local constituents.

Finally, the Rutgers–Camden MPA program has been instrumental in shaping my career aspirations. It has strengthened my leadership and analytical skills while deepening my understanding of governance, policy, and social impact. The mentorship and encouragement from faculty have reinforced my commitment to nonprofit leadership, policy advocacy, and strategic consulting on a global scale. I feel confident that the knowledge and experiences I have gained here will enable me to drive meaningful change in the communities I serve.
