Psychology Program Launches Brain Research Lab
The opening of a new electroencephalography (EEG) lab at Rutgers–Camden brought together three people — a professor beginning her faculty role, a student starting graduate school, and the program director for Psychological Sciences ready to volunteer as the first subject. Sean Duffy, Graduate Program Director for Psychological Sciences, marked the launch by taking the seat in the lab’s first experiment, welcoming psychology professor Guannan Shen and new graduate student Emma D’Entremont in the process.
Shen, who joined the Department of Psychology after serving as a research scientist at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, studies how the brain processes sound, sight, and language. Her lab uses techniques such as EEG — sensors on the scalp that measure brain activity — to explore how people perceive and communicate.
For Emma, beginning her graduate studies as Shen launches this lab means stepping straight into hands-on research. For Duffy, it was a lighthearted but meaningful way to open the space: showing that faculty and students alike will be part of the discoveries to come.
