Analyzing Cannabinoids in Forensic Evidence
Questions about how cannabinoids appear in biological evidence are shaping new directions in forensic analysis – and Chioma Nwagbara is contributing to that work firsthand. A current Forensic Science MS student, Chioma serves as a part-time Research Assistant in Rutgers-Camden Assistant Professor Michelle G. Carlin’s lab.
Building on a BS in Forensic Chemistry from Loyola University New Orleans, Chioma is investigating whether phytocannabinoids and related compounds are present in biological matrices and, if so, in what concentrations. The research combines careful laboratory preparation with advanced analytical testing to strengthen how these substances can be detected and interpreted in forensic contexts.
In the lab, Chioma works with preparation methods including protein precipitation, solid phase extraction, and liquid-liquid extraction, alongside analytical techniques such as gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Together, these approaches contribute to rigorous chemical analysis addressing evolving challenges in forensic science.
