Samuel Kankam: Inspiring a New Generation in Mathematical Sciences

From the moment Samuel Kankam arrived at Rutgers-Camden as a student in the Mathematical Sciences program, his passion for teaching and community engagement became a defining part of his journey. Embracing the supportive and inclusive environment, Samuel discovered the power of personal connections and impactful education. Now an alumnus and a lecturer, he continues to shape the academic landscape, inspiring students and making meaningful contributions both in and out of the classroom at Rutgers-Camden.

A Global Journey That Inspired a Teaching Passion

My academic path began in Ghana and took a transformative turn when I moved to the United States in 2007. After starting at the University of Cape Coast, I transferred to The Ohio State University to complete my undergraduate studies in mathematics. This experience wasn’t just about earning a degree; it was about discovering my passion for teaching and education.

During my final years at Ohio State, I noticed many undergraduates struggling to grasp math concepts, which sparked a desire to make a meaningful impact. This realization drove me to pursue further studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), with the dream of one day becoming a professor dedicated to helping students overcome these challenges.

As I reflect on my time at Rutgers-Camden, the teaching experience, the academic rigor, and the supportive community have all been instrumental in preparing me for my future in academia.

Why Rutgers-Camden Stood Out

Rutgers-Camden stood out to me as a place that genuinely cares about individual student success. Coming from the large and impersonal environment of Ohio State, I immediately felt at home here. Rutgers-Camden’s inclusive and welcoming nature made me feel seen, supported, and part of a community where my contributions mattered.

One of the most fulfilling parts of my experience at Rutgers-Camden was teaching courses while completing my master’s degree in mathematics. I loved stepping into the educator role and working with students in a setting that emphasized both academic rigor and meaningful connections. The small class sizes allowed for impactful teaching moments and a supportive atmosphere where learning thrived.

Being actively involved in the graduate school and the broader Rutgers community was crucial. I cherished the opportunities to guide, share insights, and connect with others. These experiences not only enriched my academic life but also strengthened my ties to my field and the wider Rutgers-Camden family.

Looking Ahead: A Commitment to Student Success

As I reflect on my time at Rutgers-Camden, I’m grateful for the teaching experiences, academic challenges, and unwavering support I received. Now, as a Mathematics Lecturer, I’m driven to create a classroom where students feel inspired, understood, and empowered to reach their full potential.
