Challenging the Status Quo in Public Administration
Public administration isn’t just about policies and procedures—it’s about people, communities, and the decisions that shape them. Clinton McNair explores the complexities of social equity, local governance, and nonprofit management, using research to uncover how citizens perceive fairness and how those views influence bureaucratic systems. As a faculty member in the Public Administration MPA and EMPA programs, he challenges students to think beyond textbooks, applying management concepts to real-world problems. Public service isn’t for the passive observer—it’s for those ready to tackle challenges, drive innovation, and make an impact. As the field evolves, McNair’s work highlights the urgency of transparent, data-driven governance and the role future leaders will play in shaping it.
How Equity, Local Governance, and Public Perception Intersect
My research focuses on social equity, nonprofits, local government, willingness to pay, and disaster recovery. Currently, I am particularly interested in understanding how citizens perceive equitable policies, their attitudes toward the empowerment of local governments, and the potential impact of these views on bureaucratic systems. To explore these topics, I use social experiments and mixed methods to collect and analyze data, aiming to provide insights that inform policy decisions and governance strategies.
Seize the moment! Public administration is a career shaped by what you make of it—full of challenges, but also deeply rewarding.

Beyond the Textbook: Teaching with Real-World Applications
I currently teach courses in Human Resource Management and Nonprofit Management. What I enjoy most about teaching is the intellectual challenge that comes with engaging students. They bring not only sharp minds but also valuable lived experiences, which constantly push me to think beyond traditional teaching methods and create meaningful, real-world learning opportunities. I strive to bridge academic research with practical applications, ensuring that students can see the relevance of their studies in their future careers. It doesn’t always go perfectly, but I love seeing students critically engage with management concepts and learning from their diverse perspectives.
Why Public Administration? A Career of Purpose and Impact
My biggest piece of advice? Seize the moment! Public administration is a calling for those passionate about problem-solving and systematic thinking. It’s a career shaped by what you make of it—full of challenges, but also deeply rewarding. It’s not for everyone, but for those drawn to public service, it offers an opportunity to create meaningful change. If you’re driven by a desire to make a difference, public administration is a field that can truly shape both your future and the communities you serve.
Must-Reads for Future Public Administrators
For those interested in public administration, I highly recommend Controlling the Bureaucracy by William West, Race and Social Equity by Susan Gooden, and The Color of Law by Richard Rothstein. Each of these works provides important insights into governance, policy, and social justice. For those seeking inspiration, I encourage listening to Trevor Noah’s audiobook, Born a Crime. His story resonated with me during a time when I needed direction, offering a powerful perspective on resilience and optimism.
