Teaching Spanish (M.A.T.)
Welcome to the Rutgers-Camden Master of Arts in Teaching Spanish program. Our program prepares students to meet the demands for language education driven by exciting demographic trends in our region, alongside the mandated requirements in New Jersey schools. Through our comprehensive curriculum and dedicated faculty, you will acquire the essential skills to become a successful and impactful Spanish teacher in K-12 schools and two-year colleges.

The Master of Arts in Teaching Spanish is intended for those interested in pursuing a career in K-12 education or teaching at the community college level. The program provides practical training in Spanish for teachers working in a bilingual setting and is ranked in the top ten among similar programs in the field.
Our M.A.T. offers fluent Spanish speakers, hailing from diverse cultural and educational backgrounds, a comprehensive understanding of the methodologies and expectations commonly found in U.S. classrooms. Additionally, the M.A.T. is well-suited for Anglophone students aiming to enhance their fluency in Spanish. Graduates will combine advanced language abilities with intensive training in pedagogical methods and a keen sensibility to the special needs of their academic and cultural communities.
The program offers three tracks:
MAT for already Certified Teachers of Spanish (30 credits)
MAT for students pursuing Teacher Certification without 30 content credits in Spanish (45 credits)
MAT for students pursuing Teacher Certification with 30 undergraduate credits in Spanish (30 credits)

This comprehensive approach, coupled with the program’s immersive Spanish-language instruction, equips our graduates to excel in diverse educational environments and make a positive impact as Spanish-language educators.
Program in Action
The Rutgers Board of Governors approved the new Department of Education and Teacher Preparation, overseeing education programs at Graduate School–Camden.
Ana Laguna, professor and MAT Spanish Faculty, taught A Taste for Culture, an immersive program exploring a nation’s identity through cuisine, including travel to Spain.
Helena Cabezas, MAT-Spanish student, reached Fulbright U.S. Student Program semifinals, a prestigious opportunity for exceptional college students to study abroad.
INTRO TO SPANISH SOCIOLINGUISTICS
This course offers a panoramic view of Hispanic sociolinguistics, covering topics from basic concepts to language variation, bilingualism, and more.
METHODS OF TEACHING SPANISH
This course explores fundamental questions in Spanish language learning, teaching, and acquisition, equipping students with linguistic theories and pedagogical insights.
TEACHING SPANISH LITERATURE
This course emphasizes the significance of a literary component in K-12 curriculum, equipping teachers with tools for effective Spanish literature instruction.
ASSESSMENT & EVALUATION IN THE SPANISH CLASSROOM
This course delves into assessing foreign/second languages, with a focus on Spanish teaching, bridging theory and practical application for educators.
DOING RESEARCH IN SPANISH LITERATURE & LINGUISTICS
This course equips future managers with IT’s impact on decision-making and asset management, blending managerial and technical aspects through case studies and assignments.
PSYCHOLOGICAL FOUNDATIONS OF TEACHING SPANISH
This interdisciplinary course delves into the psychological aspects of learning Spanish as a Second Language, enhancing pedagogical competencies for teachers.

|LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION||At least two letters of recommendation, preferably from academic references|
|PERSONAL STATEMENT||Personal statement (maximum two pages) about academic interests and career goals|
Preference is given to those submitted before the deadline for both decisions and funding opportunities. Applications received after the deadlines will be considered based on available space and budgetary constraints.
