Teacher of Students with Disabilities Certificate

Teacher of Students with Disabilities (Certificate)

The Teacher of Students with Disabilities Certificate is designed to prepare you for the real-world responsibilities of teaching students with disabilities. As you work through the program, you’ll develop practical skills in assessing student learning, designing effective instruction, and navigating the special education process from referral through transition. Depending on your certification level, you’ll take coursework focused on either elementary or secondary assessment. You’ll also explore language and literacy development, differentiated instruction, and the legal and collaborative structures that shape special education. Taken together, these courses build a strong foundation for equitable, student-centered teaching.

You’ll also engage with essential foundations: how children and adolescents develop, how exceptionalities influence learning, and how to manage a wide range of behaviors in the classroom. Courses such as Psychological Foundations of Learning, Exceptionalities, and Managing Student Behaviors will help you recognize individual learning needs and respond with effective, research-based strategies. These experiences emphasize inclusive practices, developmental understanding, and the importance of fostering a healthy classroom climate.

Throughout the certificate, you’ll engage with coursework that balances theory and application. Each class is aligned with the New Jersey Professional Standards for Teachers (NJPST) and designed to strengthen your ability to meet the diverse needs of learners. Whether you’re managing behavior in inclusive classrooms, planning differentiated instruction, or collaborating across disciplines, you’ll leave with the tools to advocate effectively and teach confidently.
