Graduate Turns Math Expertise into Global Opportunity
“I can call myself a data scientist, a mathematician, and a quantitative analyst,” Touba Marrie says. “But of all these things, the central pillar is mathematics, and I’m proud of it.” In With Roots in The Gambia, Graduate Found Opportunity and Purpose at Rutgers–Camden, Christina Lynn shares Touba’s story—a journey that carried him across Africa, Europe, and North America before he found the right fit in the Master of Business and Science (MBS) program at Rutgers–Camden, with a specialization in Industrial & Applied Mathematics.
As a graduate student, Touba secured a federally funded fellowship with the Louisville & Indiana Railroad, where he developed the first cost-benefit analysis model for U.S. train accidents—a tool now under consideration by the Federal Railroad Administration. He also presented original research on financial mathematics and risk modeling, using The Gambia as a case study, at Rutgers–Camden’s SPARK! showcase. The MBS program’s combination of technical, scientific, and business coursework gave him the tools to take on complex, applied challenges—while building a sense of community through soccer, cooking, and friendships on campus.
Now preparing to establish a data research consulting firm in the U.S.—with plans to expand to The Gambia—Touba credits his graduate experience with equipping him for the next stage of his career. “I can do so all thanks to the knowledge that came from Rutgers and from my previous institutions,” he says.
