Fluorescence Meets Forensics: A Groundbreaking Fingerprint Powder
Forensic science is where science meets the law, and for Kristen Smith, it has always been a passion. Inspired by crime scene investigation shows during her childhood, Kristen knew she wanted to work in the field. As a student in the Forensic Science MS program at Rutgers Graduate School-Camden, she discovered her niche in fingerprint analysis, combining her fascination with crime scenes and her chemistry background.
As part of her capstone project, Kristen developed a novel fingerprint powder that stands out for its dual visibility—it is effective under both alternative light sources and to the naked eye. Unlike traditional fluorescent powders, her formulation is affordable, user-friendly, and accessible even to those without a chemistry background. Using her expertise and creative problem-solving, Kristen created a powder that has the potential to become a vital tool in the field of forensic science. With Rutgers’ support, she is currently pursuing a patent for her innovative work.
Now an alum of the Forensic Science MS program, Kristen credits her experience at Rutgers Graduate School-Camden with helping her uncover her true passion and refine her skills. Reflecting on her journey, she shared, “This program truly helped me find myself and my calling within the field, and I have the utmost gratitude for it.” Her story highlights how Rutgers empowers students to turn their passions into meaningful contributions, paving the way for future innovations.
