Diwali Lights Up Rutgers-Camden

Being away from home during festive times can be challenging for international students like Naman Singh, a Data Science MS student and International Student Ambassador. When Naman expressed his feelings about missing Diwali to Dean Elizabeth Atkins of the Office of International Students & Global Programs (OIS), her response was simple and encouraging: “Bring an authentic Diwali here—with all the garlands, decorations, music, dancing, and rangolis!”

With the enthusiastic support of the South Asian Appreciation for Tradition and Heritage (SAATH) and faculty members such as Dr. Sunil Shende, Graduate Program Director for the Computer Science and Data Science programs, and Dr. Suneeta Ramaswami, Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs for the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Naman and his peers recreated the warmth, lights, and unity that make Diwali so meaningful.

Known as the Festival of Lights, Diwali is celebrated by millions around the world. It symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil. Through its vibrant traditions—rangoli art, decorative lamps, music, and joyous gatherings—it fosters a deep sense of connection and shared celebration. By bringing Diwali to campus, students not only honored these cherished traditions but also shared their cultural heritage with the wider Rutgers-Camden community.
